Gunpowder Green Tea: Decoding the Grades of China's Spherical Treasure
Gunpowder Green tea
01.

Gunpowder green tea, renowned for its tightly rolled pellet-like leaves resembling historic gunpowder grains, is classified into distinct grades based on leaf size, appearance, and flavor intensity. The highest grade, Special Gunpowder, features small, uniform pellets with a vibrant green color and a smooth, smoky-sweet profile. This premium variety is handpicked from young tea buds and undergoes meticulous rolling and drying, resulting in a liquor that is bright, clean, and free from bitterness. It is favored by connoisseurs for its ability to release layers of flavor during multiple infusions, making it a staple in high-end tea markets.

In contrast, lower grades like Grade One and Grade Two Gunpowder contain slightly larger or less uniform pellets, with a more pronounced earthy or astringent taste. These grades are often machine-processed for efficiency, catering to bulk export markets where affordability and durability are prioritized. While still widely used in Moroccan mint tea and other blends, they lack the finesse of the Special Grade, offering a bolder, less refined profile. Despite these differences, all Gunpowder grades share the tea's signature resilience, making them ideal for long-steeping preparations in global cuisines.
